

Margaret “Peg” Viney went home to be with her heavenly father, on Saturday, April 6, 2024. after an extended period of illness. Margaret was a faithful Christian and beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, and inspiration to many.
Born on March 23, 1924, at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri to Lieutenant (later Colonel) Stephen Y. and Louise B. McGiffert. She grew up an “Army Brat” in Oklahoma, Kansas, Minnesota, The Territory of Hawaii, and the District of Columbia. She graduated from Lawton High School, Lawton, Oklahoma, in 1942. She attended the University of Oklahoma, and George Washington University. She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. During World War II, while serving in the Woman's Army Air Corps (WAAC) she married her high school sweetheart, Lieutenant (later Colonel) George C. Viney. During the next 33 years, she supported his Army career as a full-time partner and a mother to their four children, through three combat deployments, one policing action, as well as, his assignments in Texas, Japan, Washington State, Oklahoma, Germany, Belgium, Kansas, Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia, and North Carolina. Along with being an active member and leader of red cross volunteers and initiator of an early form of Family Support Groups.
She and her loving husband George have lived in San Antonio, Texas since 1973. After his retirement from the U. S. Army in 1976, they have spent the last 48 years dividing their interest between traveling the world, visiting their extended family members, and managing five farms, and their oil / gas interests in Kansas. Since 2005, they remained active and busy living at the Army Residence Community in San Antonio.
Margaret “Peg” Viney is survived by three sons and a daughter; George Steven Viney and wife, Susan K Viney of Apex, NC; Dr. Kenneth Stewart (a.k.a. Robert Page Viney), and wife Jasmine Stewart of Santa Fe, NM; Major (Retired) Richard Lee Viney, and wife Carolyn S. Viney of Houston, TX; and Janet V. Hodges and husband Kirvin Hodges of Murdock, KS; as well as, seven grandsons, three granddaughters and their families; including twenty great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; and numerous extended family, and friends.
“Peg” was preceded in death by her husband of 75 years, Colonel (Retired) George C. Viney, her parents Stephen Y. and Louise B. McGiffert, her sister, Mary Clark, and her brother, Lieutenant General (Retired) John R. McGiffert and his wife, Pat.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM Friday, May 3, 2024, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.

Pastor Sammy Tippit will officiate. Interment will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mark A. Viney, Doug S. Viney, Sunni Stewart-Viney, Richard M. Viney, Brian C. Viney, George K. Viney. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
