Maria Guadalupe Caballero

Maria was born in San Pedro, Coahuila México to Teresa Ochoa and Luis Manuel De La O on December 13, 1935. She worked as a bank teller before she met and married the love of her life Dionicio (Nick) Caballero, Jr. on June 14, 1958, in San Pedro, Coahuila.

Maria was a devoted full-time wife and mother. She lovingly managed the household while Nick served in the Army. They lived in Texas, Maryland, and Germany, before settling in San Antonio in 1972. For many years she was a volunteer at Divine Providence Catholic Church. They moved to Converse in 2009 where they became members of St. Monica Catholic Church. Maria enjoyed spending hours outdoors gardening, taking considerable pride in her flourishing garden. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family; their home was filled with food and laughter.

Maria is preceded in death by her parents Teresa and Luis De la O. Brothers Rodolfo, Luis, and Alvaro. Sisters Bertha, Margarita, Alicia, and Maria Teresa.

Maria is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Dionicio (Nick) Caballero, Jr. Her children are Maria Garcia and her ex-husband Rene; Alexandra Verstuyft and her husband Lloyd; Luis Caballero and his wife Amy; Sonia Gooding and her husband David; and Roberto Caballero and his husband Jake. She is also survived by her sister, Gloria Cepeda.

She was Memaw to fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. They all adored her, and she loved them immensely. She looked forward to every blessed addition to the family.

Visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218, on June 18, 2026, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm, with a rosary service from 6:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Monica Catholic Church 501 North St., Converse, TX 78109, on June 19, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Interment will be at a later date.
