Maria Del Carmen Gonzales is survived by her devoted husband, Gregory Gonzales, as well as her father, Juan Segura, and his wife, Maricela. She leaves behind her brothers, Fernando Segura and his wife Amanda, and Gustavo Segura and his wife Jessica, along with Haley, Isaias, and Cristian, all of whom held a special place in her life. Maria was preceded in death by her mother, Maria Del Carmen Segura.
She grew up in El Paso, Texas, with her large family and graduated from Ysleta High School. She later earned both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Our Lady of the Lake University. Maria built her career with SAISD, first serving as a middle school math teacher and later as a middle school counselor. She loved her work and especially valued the opportunity to support her students. She was beloved by students and staff alike.
Following her first diagnosis of ovarian cancer, Maria dedicated herself to helping, inspiring, and advocating for others facing ovarian cancer and other cancers. She became involved with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, and Thrivewell. Through her social media presence, she shared inspiring posts, videos, words of encouragement, and her own cancer journey in order to help others.
Maria was active, full of life and color, and encouraging to those around her, including people she had just met. Her openness and willingness to connect with others left a lasting impression on many.
Her battle with cancer did not define a loss. Her fight was over, and she earned her rest. Maria Del Carmen Gonzales will be remembered with deep love and enduring respect by those who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to be made to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, or Thrivewell in Maria's honor.
