Maria I. Johnson, 85, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2026, in San Antonio. Born in Juárez, Mexico, Maria was a woman of remarkable elegance, not only in how she dressed and carried herself, but in the warmth, grace, and kindness she extended to everyone she met. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, she lived with unwavering integrity, boundless generosity, and a joyful spirit that made her seem forever young. She had a passion for dancing and delighted in music of all kinds, especially anything soulful, lively, and full of joy. Above all, Maria was a mother at heart, not only to her own children, but to generations of friends, neighbors, and anyone fortunate enough to cross her path. Her greatest joy was bringing people together, especially around a home-cooked meal. She affectionately called her kitchen “my office,” and nothing delighted her more than feeding a houseful of guests and watching them return for seconds and thirds.
Maria’s selfless love extended far beyond her home. A breast cancer survivor, she dedicated much of her life to serving others, volunteering with hospice and, more recently, with Blessed Angels Community Center, where she helped care for local seniors. She adored animals of every kind, from her beloved family dogs to the cats, raccoons, opossums, and even skunks she welcomed to her back porch. In her later years, some of her happiest moments were spent watching her granddaughter Sophie ride her bicycle and play with neighborhood friends, continuing a lifetime of nurturing generations of children. She often spoke lovingly of her late brother, Rafael “Chato,” whom she looked forward to seeing again. Maria is survived by her sons, Adrian and Brian Johnson, and her cherished grandchildren, Sophie Johnson and Garrett. Her legacy is one of unconditional love, extraordinary kindness, and the countless lives made brighter simply by knowing her.
