Maria Ocanas was the daughter of Jose Blanco Carranza and Modesta De Leon Carranza. She graduated from Foy H. Moody High School.
Throughout her working life, she was recognized as an exemplary employee. Receiving recognition in memorable ways when she won trips through work. One of the many moments that reflected a life marked by gratitude and steady perseverance.
Maria shared her life with her loving husband, Gilberto Benito Islas. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Breeanna Lacombe (Brian), and her son, Jonathan Ocanas. She is also survived by her siblings, Norma Tunchez (Jesse), Lucy Carranza, and Jose Carranza. Her love for family extended with special tenderness to her grandchildren, Caiden, Londyn, Achilles, Kingston, and Brooklyn, who brought her deep pride and joy.
Maria carried with her a genuine warmth that made others feel cared for and seen. She enjoyed traveling and enjoyed many trips with family, including cruising to the Bahamas, a scenic trip to Colorado, and a trip to Disney World with her cherished grandchildren. During a visit to the Vatican, she had the opportunity to see Pope Francis, an experience she remembered with significant meaning.
Above all, Maria Ocanas will be remembered for her kindness and thoughtfulness, for the steady way she showed up for the people she loved, and for the loyal friendship she offered so freely. Her helpful spirit, deep devotion to her children and grandchildren, and the quiet strength of her care will remain a lasting part of her legacy.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Porter Loring Mortuary North, with a rosary to follow.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at St. Helena’s Catholic Church, 14714 Edgemont St., San Antonio, TX.
Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
