Born on July 7, 1930, in San Antonio, Texas, to Diego and Magdalena Celestino, Maria was raised in a strong Catholic home where faith, family, and service were the cornerstones of daily life. These values continued to guide her throughout her long and blessed life.
Maria was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She was married to Pedro M. Rivera, for 60 wonderful years. Together they built a home filled with love where they raised 8 children.
A faithful and active member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Maria dedicated much of her life to serving her parish and community. She was a proud member of the Guadalupanas, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the Neocatechumenal Way, always giving her time and heart to the Church she loved.
Maria found joy in life’s simple and beautiful moments. She loved solving puzzles, watching her favorite Novelas and collecting keepsakes—especially her treasured coffee cups from around the world. She had a special connection to nature and could often be found tending to her many plants with love and care.
Maria and her family shared a love for travel, and she was blessed to see many beautiful places. She traveled to Europe on several occasions and also visited Canada, Mexico City, and several cities in the United States—each trip filled with adventure, laughter, and love. No matter where the journey led, there was always a meaningful pit stop in New Mexico, a place that held a special place in her heart. She also enjoyed the great outdoors through camping trips, beach outings, and cheering on her favorite sports teams.
Maria is now reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband, Pedro M. Rivera, her beloved children Gloria Rivera, Joann Martinez, and Michael Rivera, as well as her sons-in-law Alfonso Martinez, Daniel Ahearn III, and Rudy Gonzales. Siblings Gregoria Chavarria, and Bernabe Celestino.
Maria's memory will forever live in the hearts of her daughters: Linda R. Coronado, Rachel Rivera, Isabel Ahearn, Angie Rivera and son Peter. She is also lovingly remembered by her siblings: Frimo Celestino, Felipe Celestino, Armando Celestino, and her daughters-in-law Cynthia Rivera and Sylvia Rivera; her 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a large circle of extended family and dear friends.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Visitation in honor of Maria on Sunday, October 19, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Trevino Funeral Home, located at 226 Cupples Road, San Antonio, TX 78237 with a Rosary at 7:00 PM.
On Monday, October 20, 2025, loved ones will gather at the funeral home for final respects, after which a funeral procession will depart for St. Gabriel Catholic Church, located at 747 SW 39th St, San Antonio, TX 78237, where a Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Following the Mass, Maria will be laid to rest during a committal service at San Fernando Cemetery II, located at 746 Castroville Road, San Antonio, TX 78237.
Maria’s life was a testament to her unwavering faith, enduring love, and joyful spirit. Her presence, prayers, and guidance will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
