Marie Ellen Chenel Bernhardt was born in Bogalusa Louisiana on December 4th 1946. She was 74 when our Lord took her to Heaven on April 2nd 2021 on a beautiful spring day in San Antonio Texas. Marie was the mother of four children and the grandmother of eight. She was a matriarch and exuded maternal feelings and love to all of her children, grandchildren and many others. This was her nature; she was a mother and loved oh so many.

Marie didn’t know a stranger and instantly made friends and connections with everyone she spent time with. She had a way of making you feel special and loved. She was charismatic and had a beautiful heart. She put incredible energy into making every event memorable and as nice as it could be, from a dinner at the home to a wonderfully wrapped gift.

Marie spent her final working years as a teacher in early childhood development. Her soft touch and kind loving heart influenced the growth and development of countless young people and she made the world a better place.

A voracious knitter and skilled seamstress Marie was always making something for someone. At the start of the 2020 pandemic, she made hundreds of masks on her sewing machine, sewn with very nice fabric in beautiful colors and patterns. When Marie’s hands touched something, the product produced was always excellent with much attention to detail.

Marie possessed Julia Child level cooking skills and prepared not only delicious meals, but thoroughly enjoyed setting a formal table and having friends and family gather to eat together. These events always included bottles of wine, stories, laughter, companionship, and love.

Marie nurtured and cared for her dogs and cats, she loved her music, she enjoyed football and basketball, she enjoyed reading, going to the river and ocean, but most of all she loved those around her. Marie rarely had a harsh word for someone, she found kind words and positive ways to describe those she encountered.

Marie walked with God, she had an understanding of her eternal soul, and she is looking down from heaven on us all with her arms around us in that maternal loving embrace she so liberally gave throughout her life.

Marie is survived by her daughters Alexis and Justine and her sons Leslie and Jeff as well as her grandchildren; Forrest, Hannah, Ethan, Celeste, Emily, Ellen, Elijah and Gabriel. She is also survived by her sister Margot. The memorial service for Marie will be held on Thursday April 8th at 3:30PM at Sunset North Funeral Home in San Antonio.

I have lovely memories of Marie. She welcomed our son into her family with such generosity. When we met Marie for the first time it felt as though we were meeting an old friend - I'll never forget that feeling. When we visited the US for the first time we stayed with Marie. She was a wonderful host - such fun! There were always stories to tell and the talk never faltered. Zero awkwardness! Our first cold Christmas was spent with Marie and the family. It was absolutely magical. It's a memory we treasure and talk about fondly. We feel lucky we were able to spend a bit of time with Marie. Looking through the tributes on this page made us smile - they really capture who Marie was - an independent woman, loved Mother and Grandmother and friend. Our deepest sympathy to her beloved family and friends on your loss.

Teacher Marie was an integral part of my children's younger years. We always loved our time with her and my children came home singing songs and doing the finger games that she so lovingly brought to them. Not only was I a parent in her program, we were colleagues for years and were good friends during that time. I also had the privilege to teach her youngest, Justine, and to send my daughter to Alexis' preschool, so, for a number of years, we worked closely together supporting each other's needs and growth. I am so sorry that Marie's loving presence has left this earthly plane and I know that she is looking with that same loving gaze on all of us now. I am holding the family in my heart and send them all my love. The Sacramento Waldorf School faculty and staff are also holding you all and we will be keeping a light for Marie in our faculty room in the coming week. Know that we are all with you in our hearts.

We are so very sorry to hear this news. Our sincerest condolences to you and your family. My daughter and I attended the Parent Toddler program at Waldorf in Sacramento, CA 17 years ago. Teacher Marie was her first teacher apart from Mom, of course. Teacher Marie was memorable. I remember her patient, creative and kind guidance with both my daughter and me. We will pray for your family. May Teacher Marie rest in eternal peace.
