Marie Bowen, beloved mother, grandmother, mentor, and friend, passed away at age 81 on Thursday April 13, 2023, at her home in San Antonio, Texas after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease and chronic pain.
Marie Bowen, née Priscilla Brewer Peavy, was born on June 30, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan to Doris Brewer and Jack Peavy, who predeceased her. She grew up in the Detroit suburbs, where she graduated from Fitzgerald High School in 1959 and eventually began raising her only child, Sara, with her first husband, Dr. David Pastoor. In 1976, Marie and Sara moved to Dallas, Texas where Marie spent the next 41 years of her life until moving to San Antonio to be with her family in 2017.
For over 30 years, Marie enjoyed a successful career as an underwriter in corporate insurance, after which she transitioned happily into a very active retirement at age 65. In 1995, she married the love of her life, Donald Bowen. Marie was continuously sober in Alcoholics Anonymous for 31 years, and through this program she dedicated herself to being a sponsor, a mentor, and a source of experience, strength and hope for many alcoholics seeking recovery. She leaves behind countless loving friends in this community who will never forget her wisdom, compassion, and grace.
Marie touched the hearts of all those who knew her. She was loved and admired by many for her kind and gentle spirit, her unwavering dedication to her faith, her quiet generosity, and the occasional sass no one ever saw coming. She deeply adored her family and was truly a blessing to us all.
In 2015, her beloved husband Don passed away, leaving her in unbearable grief from which she never fully recovered. It brings us great joy to imagine them reunited, no longer suffering, and dancing together with Jesus.
Marie was also preceded in death by her sister Melissa Lolmaugh and her stepson Steve Bowen. Marie is survived by her daughter Dr. Sara Pastoor; stepdaughter Leslie Pribble; grandchildren Micaela Campbell, Niko Martinez, Arielle Martinez, and Wayne Martinez Jr; step grandchildren Zachary Mathis and London Pribble; two precious step great-grandchildren; and brother Rand Tanner and wife Cindy.
