Marie was born on October 2, 1933, in New York City to Italian immigrant parents and was the second of 8 children. From an early age, even though she hated hospitals and doctors, she knew God was calling her to be a nurse. Guided by the nuns at St. Catherine’s Nursing School, she graduated as an RN in 1955. In 1959, she commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the United States Air Force as a member of the Women's Air Corps so she could "travel and see the world." Her tour began in Alabama for basic training before being stationed in the small, west Texas town of Big Spring. Next stop was Fairbanks, Alaska where she served 18 months and had the privilege of helping indigenous people and nuns, which she loved. In 1962, she returned to Big Spring, not knowing that her “world travels” were at an end. She was married in May of 1962, retired as a First Lieutenant, and welcomed the first of her 5 beloved children into the world in April 1963.
Marie continued her nursing career and served her community as a Eucharistic minister and spiritual director to many in the Big Spring area and surrounding communities. In 1984, to ensure that her children could continue to attend Catholic school, she relocated to San Antonio where she became very involved in the community, including serving as a commissioner on the San Antonio Housing Authority board. In 1998, Marie retired from nursing but never stopped caring for others, always striving to glorify God in her daily actions through her service to her friends, neighbors, and family. Marie started each day by asking the Lord, “what can I do for you today?”
She was the best mom, grandma, and Gigi anyone could ever ask for. She made countless sacrifices for her children, instilling in them faith, patriotism, and a commitment to service. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, but we know that she will be there welcome us into heaven one day. Marie is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two sons, several siblings, parents, and other family members.
