Marilyn Mae Hartung, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, went to be with our Heavenly Father on October 22, 2022, at the age of 97. She was born in San Antonio, Texas on January 14, 1925, to Ralph and Emma Rubottom. Marilyn was an only child and graduated from Brackenridge High School in San Antonio. She grew up attending Grace Lutheran Church, where she later married her husband of 50 years, Marvin Milton Hartung. Soon after their marriage they transferred to St. John’s Lutheran Church, where Marilyn was a dedicated member for over seventy years. Marilyn served on the church council and volunteered for many years in the church library. A devoted mother of two daughters, she was an active school volunteer and P.T.A. member. She served on many committees and was a member and past president of the SA Opti-Mrs. Club and a member of their council of Presidents. Marilyn’s favorite years were those she spent as a volunteer for the Methodist Hospital and St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital every Tuesday for over 35 years. She was an avid bridge player throughout her life. A very social and out-going woman who made friends wherever she went, Marilyn often invited people she just met to share Christmas Eve in their home with the family. She moved into independent living at Independence Hill in 2011, where she made many friends and enjoyed participating in all the resident activities. In January 2019, Marilyn’s health declined, and she moved into the DeMatel Nursing Home at the Village at Incarnate Word. She still had her wonderful sense of humor, which she kept until her last days. Throughout her life, Marilyn’s most cherished times were those spent with her two daughters and son-in-laws, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Marilyn always said that her family was her greatest blessing in life.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Milton Hartung, and her parents and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Marilyn is survived by her two daughters, Cathy L. (H.G. “Dutch”) Schonenberg, and Chris C. (Michael J) Dillard, both of San Antonio, TX; granddaughters, Erin L. (Jeremy) Kethley, of Dripping Springs, TX, Tracey A. (Andrew) Hull of Houston, TX; grandsons, Michael N. (Michelle) Dillard of Wimberly, TX, Kyle M.
