Marilyn was born on March 23, 1949 in Enid, Oklahoma to Wilma and Lauren Clark. She was a 1967 graduate of Bellaire High School in Bellaire, Texas, and in 1971 she received her Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Texas Tech University. In May of that same year she married Byrne Smith. Byrne and Marilyn lived in Dallas, TX, Houston, TX, Las Cruces, NM, and Albuquerque, NM, before settling down in Houston and Jersey Village, TX to raise their family. They were members of the Episcopal Church.
Marilyn retired in 2018 after a long and distinguished career as a technical writer, most recently for Hewlett Packard Co. Prior to that she held positions at White Sands Missile Range, Schlumberger, CogniSeis, and Compaq Computer. She was a loving, dedicated, and generous mother who always looked out for her children. Her greatest joy in life was being a mother and grandmother. Marilyn loved cooking, sewing, knitting, listening to music, going for walks with her husband, and spending time with her family. She had a wonderful sense of humor and she loved to laugh. Marilyn is preceded in death by her father, Lauren Clark. She is survived by her mother, Wilma Clark; her husband of 49 years, Byrne Smith; son, Jeffrey Smith (Lori); daughter, Leslie Guerra (Omar); grandchildren, Brandon Smith and Libby Guerra; and brother, Robert Clark (Bonney).
A socially distanced outdoor service is planned for Friday, August 21 at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218. The family welcomes all but understands that due to the pandemic some may not be able to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the ALS Association of Texas at www.alstexas.org.
