Mario A Pompa Jr., a revered husband, father, son, and brother, departed this world on April 13, 2024, after a valiant battle with cancer, in the same city that had been the backdrop to his entire life’s story, San Antonio. Born on September 13, 1969, also in San Antonio, Mario's journey was one marked by warmth, skill, and an unwavering spirit that touched everyone in his orbit. His 54 years of life were rooted in the love of his family, including his devoted wife, Leticia L. Pompa; his son, Albert Pompa; his daughter, Alyssa M. Pompa; his mother Maria Elena Pompa (Deceased), his father, Mario A. Pompa Sr.; and his brothers, Victor C. Pompa and Pedro Pompa.
*Note From Letty Pompa: My first encounter with Mario was at 14 years old. I had the pleasure of meeting his entire family & I was hooked. The love, support, and welcome made me feel right at home. I will be forever grateful to the Pompa family. I love you, Mario with all my heart, your loving wife of thirty-one years.Mario's early years were spent in the corridors and classrooms of Thomas Jefferson High School, graduating with the class of 1988. His pursuit of higher education led him to attend San Antonio College in 1989, a period when his innate ability to connect with others and his investment in personal development shone brightly. His professional life was every bit as diverse and commendable, starting as a tile setter, a testament to his dexterity and artistry. Latterly, he joined the postal service, supporting the community's infrastructure with the same commitment and diligence he applied to all his undertakings. Mario also found purpose in giving back, serving as a food bank courier, among his quietly substantial contributions to those in need.
Beyond his professional accolades and efforts, Mario nurtured a fervent passion for sports, which could arguably rival his most ardent professional pursuits. His loyalty to the Dallas Cowboys was unwavering; through thick and thin, triumphs and downfalls, Mario's support remained a constant beacon. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Lakers brought out the fan in Mario, allowing him to revel in the simple joys of a homerun or a basket. And let's not forget the Texas A&M teams—Mario bled maroon for the Aggies, savoring each victory as if it were his own.The attributes that perhaps most define Mario are his thoughtfulness, kindness, and handiness. These qualities permeated his actions and interactions, leaving a legacy that is as tactful as it is tangible. Whether it was fixing a broken toy for his children, tweaking a home appliance, or merely lending an ear to a friend in need, Mario exemplified what it meant to be present, both in skill and in spirit.Though he has left the physical realm, Mario’s impact is imperishable. The values he lived by and imparted—the hard work, the dedication to family, and the undying spirit of camaraderie—will resonate through the lives of his loved ones and in the cherished memories held within the San Antonio community. As the sun sets on Mario A. Pompa Jr.'s time with us, we remember a man whose existence was a testament to living fully, loving deeply, and laughing heartily.
As the Pompa family grieves this profound loss, they find solace in gratitude for the years shared with Mario—years filled with happiness, purpose, and unity. In place of traditional sentiments, they invite those who knew him to reflect on the joy and authenticity that Mario brought into their lives, as his soul embarks on its next, unknowable journey.
A service to honor Mario's life will be held at a time and place already shared personally with family and friends. Mario’s aura of grace and tenacity will be the guidepost for his final send-off, with the same sense of family and community that he cherished so dearly throughout his extraordinary life.
