She experienced hard times early in life. During the great depression, her father, a wildcat oilman, died from tuberculosis when she was seven years old. To make ends meet, her mother sewed and made flowers for her and her sister to sell to the neighborhood while her older brother, Eugene, also contributed to the family through his flooring business. During this time, her love of reading and education was born as her older sister read to her often and even took her to her first Shakespeare play when she was ten.
In high school, Mimi met her first husband, Albert Lantz Caughey. Soon after they were married, World War II broke out and Albert spent over two years in the South Pacific.
During that time, the couple’s first child, Michael Lantz, was born and he was two years old before he met his father.
After the war, Mimi and Albert moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Albert worked for Delta Airlines. Mimi gave birth to their second child, Meghan Jisho McDonald Caughey.
In the mid-1960s, Mimi and Albert were looking at some land in rural Georgia and unexpectedly came across a procession of the Ku Klux Klan, in full costume. That day, Mimi made a commitment to join the Civil Rights Movement and started attending rallies with her friend Betty with both daughters in tow. Later, Meghan served as a page in the Georgia Legislature and lobbied for the equity that her mother had championed. Michael served in the Army in Viet Nam, and later with the Navy in the Middle East.
Mimi loved to travel and study architecture, art, and design. Mimi loved beauty and passed this love on to her daughter. After Mimi and Albert divorced, she went back to school and got her teaching degree and then her master's degree as a Reading Specialist from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio. She enjoyed teaching reading and loved the children and her community of teachers.
During this time, she met Robert Charles DeHart, and they fell in love and married. Robert was an engineer and vice president of Southwest Research Institute. His son, Michael, and daughter, Dayle, and their families reside in Texas.
Mimi and Robert enjoyed traveling together on their adventures around the globe. Robert endured a lengthy illness until he died in 1998. After Robert's death, she married Vincent D'Angelo originally from New York. The vibrant D'Angelo and Colera families embraced Mimi and she loved them dearly to the end of her life. Her son Michael died in Georgia and her daughter Meghan lives in Portland, Oregon, and is an artist and writer.
Her love for people and her family was reflected in how she lived her life. She experienced love and grace until she passed away on Easter 2021. Her ashes rest in Meghan's garden and above the Pacific Ocean at the stunning Cape Perpetua which she said was her favorite place in the world.
The world is better because of her life and love.
