Marjorie Parrigan was adopted as an infant to share the loving home of her parents, Marguerite and George C. Zimmerman. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to San Antonio where Marjorie attended public schools, studied piano with her mother, and graduated from Jefferson High School.
Marjorie attended Southwestern University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1954 cum laude in music education. She continued her studies completing a masters of education from the University of Houston in 1961. An excellent pianist, her skills were recognized nationally, and she was encouraged to study in New York for a concert career. Ultimately she chose family responsibilities in San Antonio where she remained for the rest of her professional work.
Marjorie was an acclaimed English teacher and chair of the English Department at John Marshall High School. Courses included Senior and Honors English, among others. As a perfomer, she sang with the San Antonio Symphony Mastersingers, and was contralto section leader in the Laurel Heights Methodist Church Choir. It was during a service where Marjorie was soloist that she met her husband Richard, who had come to San Antonio to serve as church organist. Throughout her life she was active with many choral groups such as Tuesday Musical Club. She was accompanist for the Laurel Heights Super Adults for many years.
A devoted couple, Marjorie and Richard celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on June 27, 2020. She is survived by her husband, Richard (San Antonio), sister-in-law Peggy Ann Parrigan (Garland), and cousin John Lester (Houston). Marjorie contributed much to others, was an admired teacher, excellent performer, faithfull church member and loving wife. She will be missed by all those in her circle.
