'Sadly, having lost touch with Mark over the past several months, I am embarrassed to say that I only just learned of his tragic passing. Mark was a leader in our industry and a friend to many. He championed our disease interest with passion and dedication, helping to open up several pathways of progress for researchers, patients and physicians alike. I am ever grateful for having had the blessing of calling him a friend and colleague, and I am truly sorry I did not get the opportunity to express my gratitude to him for his efforts more often. I extend my sincerest sympathies and condolences to his family, whom I came to know through his proud stories and wonderful anecdotes each time we spoke. Mark will always remain a fond, bright spot in the memory of all of us who had the good fortune of getting to know him. 'We are so deeply saddened over the loss of our dear friend. Mark became a part of our family 44 years ago when we were growing up in Corpus Christi. Even as a teenager in high school he had a quick wit, playful sense of humor, passion for life and a strong sense of family values.
