Born in Colombia, South America to missionary parents, Mark and his siblings grew up in San Antonio under the pastoral care of their parents. He worked at a young age at the original Bill Miller's Bar-B-Q. As soon as the opportunity came, he left home and headed north to Minnesota where he met his wife Kathryn while she was attending college in Minneapolis. They married in 1969.
Mark served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971 as a military police officer and K9 dog handler. This led to a long-term career with the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol as an Inspector, which took him and his family to California, Arizona, Alaska, Oregon, and Washington.
Yet his roots were always in San Antonio, so upon his first retirement from the U.S. Customs, Mark and Kathryn returned to Texas and he began his career with the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). He took great pride and joy in working for the SAPD and carried the title with honor.
Mark enjoyed running, and could be seen sprinting along the city streets of San Antonio and the River Walk every day. He was an outstanding father, husband, friend, and co-worker with a sense of humor and a generous heart, giving of his time and money.
Mark was loved by his family: wife of 46 years Kathryn; his three children, Peter, Caryn, and Kirsten; his five grandchildren; his brother Tim; his sisters Miriam and Mary; and many close friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rebecca.
A memorial service to honor Mark's life will take place at 6:00 pm on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Porter Loring North, 2102 N Loop 1604 E, San Antonio, TX 78232. There will be no public viewing at the service.
