Joyce was born on December 26, 1940, in San Antonio, Texas to the late Troy Iris Bartlett, Sr. and Johnie Marrion McLain Bartlett.
Joyce was a kind, thoughtful, caring mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and neighbor and will be remembered by the many lives she touched.
As a homemaker living in San Antonio with her late husband, Sheldon Kosharek (“Capt. K”), Joyce, (“Lady J”) was a devoted wife and mother and would help anyone that was in need. Her home was always open to her friends and relatives. She welcomed them with open arms, establishing a place where people could gather anytime they needed a warm bed or the company of friends. Sheldon may have thought he was the leader of the house, but Joyce was the superhero strength behind it all.
This is where Joyce developed her love for cooking. She was a fabulous cook and was able to feed an army on a dime. We will never forget her famous “Weenie Mess!” (a special recipe of hers). She enjoyed preparing meals for her children, most especially over the holidays. For many years leading up to her passing, she collected a large library of cookbooks. (This is my homage to Jim, wink*wink.) She was an avid collector of recipes and enjoyed trying new foods and cuisines.
Joyce was an avid gardener and when she wasn’t filling her home with plants and flowers, she could be found outside tending to her garden. Joyce was probably the only woman in Texas that could grow a poinsettia outside year-round, to a size that encompassed the side of her house.
A lover of music, Joyce enjoyed most all genres of music and many an evening were spent playing records, singing and dancing with her kids, however badly but it didn’t matter, it was all about laughing and having fun. Her favorite song during those years was Elton John-Tiny Dancer. Sing it, Mom!
Many of her years were spent camping, fishing, and boating at Medina Lake. Some great times were spent around the campfire! Sheldon would bring home Military Rangers that would become like family and go camping with us every weekend. Joyce always made them feel like she was their Mom while they were there with us. And of course, she would cook great meals on the open campfire for all.
After her move to Crowley at age 60, she went back into the workforce as Administrative Assistant for Huguley Home Health Agency and worked alongside some wonderful people until her retirement in 2012.
In her spare time, she was often researching topics of interest, reading books, or playing computer games to keep her mind sharp. She loved doing puzzles.
Joyce was predeceased by her brothers Troy Iris Bartlett, Jr. and James Andrew Bartlett, and her son Joseph Sheldon Kosharek.
She is survived by her cherished sister, Jacqueline Bartlett Mason and her husband Jim, her caring nephews Joe Vernon Collins, and John Richard Sanders, Jr. and his wife, Debbie, and their loving families.
In addition, she leaves her beloved daughter, Sherri Lynn Weatherford and her husband Jack, her sons Gary Duane Hendricks and Steve Kosharek, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joyce was a Christian and her devotion to God was an important part of her life, from beginning to end. It brings us much comfort to know she is in His arms now. Her favorite Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32 — “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”
Joyce will be put to rest at Sunset Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Parkway, San Antonio, Tx. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 18, 2023, from 6 – 8 p.m. and the Graveside Service will be held on Friday, May 19, 2023, at 10 a.m.
A heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Texas Health Huguley Hospital, AdventHealth Care Center, and the Community Hospice House at Huguley. Your dedication, compassion, and kindness are greatly appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Joyce’s name to Community Healthcare of Texas/Providence Hospice will be greatly appreciated.
“There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in my heart.”
Mother
“God made a wonderful mother, A mother who never grows old; He made her smile of the sunshine, And He molded her heart of pure gold; In her eyes He placed bright shining stars, In her cheeks, fair roses you see; God made a wonderful mother, And He gave that dear mother to me.”
In Memory
“Those we Love remain with us, For Love itself lives on. Cherished memories never fade, Because a loved one is gone. Those we Love can never be More than a thought apart. For as long as there is memory, They will live on in our heart.” From your loving family.
