Martha Anni Becher Sekula was born in Bayreuth, Germany to parents, Konrad Becher and Frieda Popp Becher, on August 1, 1936, as a fraternal twin. She went to school in Bayreuth, Germany where she graduated from the German school system and afterwards attended a German trade school. She married Joseph Sekula, Sr., an American soldier, on July 6, 1958, in city of Bayreuth, Germany. She was a “model military wife” raising her three children and making many sacrifices being married to a veteran of Korean and Vietnam Wars who served in the U.S. Army twenty-two years. As a foreign-born German wife of a military serviceman speaking no English when she first arrived in the United States in December of 1958, she [as many other dependent spouses] deserved a medal for her dedication in keeping her family together and safe during the many separations she endured when her husband was stationed out of the country/state or on long-duty assignment. As her children grew older, she returned to work. She especially enjoyed working for 19 years as a special-needs bus aide for the Northeast Independent School District. She loved her special-needs school children; the children and many of their parents showered her with appreciation. She was a loving mother to her children and taught them her German customs and tongue, and as the devoted wife even made sure they were baptized, communized, and confirmed according to her husband’s Catholic faith although she was Lutheran. She was involved in many monthly get-togethers and Kaffeeklatsches with her numerous German lady friends keeping close friendships, maintaining German traditions, and warding off homesickness.
