Martin "Mike" Francis Casey, Jr. went home on September 15, 2015 after a prolonged battle with cancer. He fought well and passed peacefully in his home among family. Born in San Antonio on August 9, 1940, to Martin Francis Casey and Dorothy Mae Shelby, Mike was blessed with a life filled with strong family values and traditions.
His spiritual life began at Jefferson Methodist Church where he learned to honor God. As an Eagle Scout Mike learned the value of teamwork and achievement. These entities became the foundation of his legacy. Mike graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, earned a BS in Industrial Management from MIT, and an LLB from UT Austin Law School. After passing the Texas Bar exam, he married his next door neighbor Janet Rhine, and they set off for St. Louis to start their life together. Mike's exceptional education prepared him for an exciting career at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, developing high performance fighter aircraft, including the AV-8B, F-4 Phantom, the F-15 Strike Eagle and the F-18. After his 25 year career in St. Louis, Mike and his wife Janet, and son Martin, returned to San Antonio to start a new chapter.
He teamed up with his dear friend Cliff Hall to open Seniors 2000 Adult Day Care. Mike was also nominated for Entrepreneur of the Year for his start up of Americair of San Antonio and Austin. The involvement in these two healthcare companies birthed a new passion for Mike.
Building on his foundation, Mike continuously and faithfully invested his time and passion for excellence in healthcare, by serving on various boards within the Methodist Healthcare system for 19 years, "Serving Humanity to Honor God." Mike helped to christen the healing chapel at Stone Oak Methodist Hospital, a testament to his commitment to the power of science coupled with the miracle of God's healing spirit.
Mike was so proud of his son Martin F. Casey III, daughter in law Chloe, and precious grandchildren Salome and Calypso. In his final years, Mike saw through his grandchildren's eyes and rediscovered wonder. Mike is also survived by his wife Janet Rhine Casey; his brother Shelby Tim Casey and wife Hallie Slaughter and their sons Christopher and David Casey; sister, Dorothy Gail Casey and her daughters Shelby and Shannon and son Tristan.
The Casey family would like to thank Dr. Luis Rodriquez for steering Mike's journey through the ups and downs of his fierce battle, Avionn Home Care, and New Century Hospice.
