Martin J. Rodriguez, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2012. He was the second son of Martin and Dora Rodriguez. Due to the unfortunate death of his father, Martin at an early age was thrust out into a tumultuous era of the depression. As a teenager he was a delivery boy of Laurel Heights Pharmacy and as a means for providing financial support for the Rodriguez household he delivered the San Antonio Express and Evening News Newspaper.
Marty joined the U. S. Army Air Corps in 1939 prior to the beginning of World War II and was followed by his brother Ernest, in serving their country. He was stationed at Mather Air Force Base near Sacramento, California. After the war, Martin received an Honorable Discharge. Marty returned home and married his high school sweetheart, Elia Montalvo, and went to work at Southern Equipment Wholesale Company.
During his formative years Marty and his older brother Ernie played amateur baseball. They started their sand lot career playing at the Olmos Park Basin Diamond on Devine Road. Most of their team mates were students and graduates of Alamo Heights and their first sponsors were Mathis Meat Market and the 50-50 Buffet. This talented group of ball players then graduated to the upper crust of Amateur baseball and played in the Spanish-American League. They played for Fred's Place Mexican Restaurant, a perennial leader in amateur baseball in San Antonio.
Because of his engaging personality he was offered a job as a sales representative for the Lone Star Brewing Company. As a representative of the brewery Marty met many outstanding people of the community. As a devoted member of his church and contributor to the well being of his fellow man Marty was active in civic work. He was Chairman of the San Antonio Housing Authority, President of the Mexican Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Columbus Council 11298, Good Neighbor Commission, and Sembradores de Amistad.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elia and oldest son, Anthony. He is survived by sons; Gene Rodriguez and Michael Rodriguez; daughter, Marilyn Rodriguez Courchesne; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Matt Rodriguez, Gina Rodriguez, Gene Rodriguez, Patrick Rodriguez, Johnny Funk, Liam Rodriguez, Shawn Rodriguez, Raven Rodriguez, Jenna Rodriguez, Norijen Barton, and David Courchesne.
