Mr. Porter was one of the most memorable teachers I had during my years at Randolph High School. He was so theatrical, and not afraid to do out-of-the-box things to make an impression for the sake of teaching. I will always remember him waving his finger at us and saying, "You little neno ninos, are you listening to this important information??? Are you paying attention???" He also told us one day when our class over-reacted to a word that slipped out of a student's mouth, "You guys could make anything a dirty word if you want to... it all depends on how you react... For instance, even 'apple' could be a bad word... apple, apple, apple..." He took me through algebra, trig, calculus... who could imagine? I hated math - I'm a people/word person - but I loved Mr. Porter and his classees! His work amoung young people built their worlds and changed those worlds for good all at the same time. His legacy to us all lives on as we share what he taught us with others. May his family be comforted in knowing his life was lived well and his memory will live on in each of us. Mr. Porter, my friend...I thoroughly enjoyed his wit and story lines.  He had this sly yet diabolical smile,(kind of like "I gottcha"), particularly when he was weaving the web of curiosity and illusions that surrounded his many tales (truth or fantasy, who knows.) His memory was in tact up until his passage...AND his days at RHS were very dear to him.  His niece, Barbara, and his sister's were his prizes in life.  I'll miss him, but I do know that he is in a far better place: a safe haven with no pain & suffering. Farewell Mr. "P" you are in God's hands now...your stories will take on a new meaning!

We knew Marvin when the 3 of us worked at the American Hospital and Life Insurance Company in the early 1950's.  Marvin attended Fred's ordination as a deacon at the Government Hill Baptist Church January 10, 1954.  When our twins were born June 24, 1954,as Fred had to work the following day, Marvin was the one who pushed Lillis's wheel chair for her first visit to see her twin boys.  Marvin has always been an important part of our history here in San Antonio, although we lost touch during the later years except for the exchange of Christmas cards. Nevertheless, we will miss Marvin--he was always very funny and kept us all laughing.  May God comfort all of Marvin's family during this sad time of loss.

Mr. Porter was my 8th grade math teacher. I enjoyed his class above all others.  He always rehashed our football Friday nights, track meets, basketball games, etc. He was a true supporter of our teams, players, events, of course Randolh High.  He always had funny things to say, and never made you fell discouraged about asking any questions.  Now this is funny but he always cracked me up sneaking off to smoke a cig, and covering it up with Listerene.  Mr. Porter was at the right place at the right time for those of us going through the 60's.  RIP Mr. Porter, thank you for your calm, support, guidance, help and the fond memories you placed on a young 16y/o.  Go Ro-Hawks!

Some teachers you just never forget and Mr. Porter is one of them. He was my 7th grade Math teacher at RHS.  Must have been 1964. I always enjoyed his class and really missed it when we moved in the middle of the year.  He was so funny and made you work hard to feel good about yourself.  This is a funny memory but he always had the coolest ties. My sympathies to his family.  God speed.

Mr. Porter (he said he'd never let me call him Marvin!) was a fabulous teacher and an even better person. Not one student who had him at Randolph High School has forgotten him, I am certain. He was hysterically funny and really, really cared about his students. I was blessed to visit him fairly regularly in the past four years and he never ceased to make me laugh and entertain me with his stories and experiences. He was wonderful to me when my mother died suddenly, and I'll always be grateful for his influence and friendship!

Marvin was such a good friend and neighbor to my mother, Ann Jones.  He   always checked on her, ran errands for her when needed and was there for support.  I remember him with much love.  I am so sorry for your loss.  Praise God we'll see each other in heaven!

My goodness...memories of teaching at RHS with Marvin came to mind when I saw this notice of his passing!  And....occasionally sitting together in church at Trinity added to those memories. On one occasion, we had a rather long winded guest preacher....Marvin had bought some Girl Scout cookies from some kid that morning and commented, "If this fella doesn't stop soon, we may have to open up these cookies for lunch!"
