In 1936, Mary Francis Holzhauer was born to Edward and Jane Winifred Holzhauer in St. Louis, Missouri. She married Airman Thomas S. Allen in 1956. She became the mother of Stefanie and Regina while stationed in Turkey. After moving back to Missouri, she became the mother of Elisabeth.
Upon returning to the states, Mary pursued a college degree at Lindenwood College and a career in elementary education. She taught at St. Sabina Catholic school for 10 years. She moved to San Antonio TX in 1978. She completed a Masters in Curriculum Instruction at the newly founded University of Texas at San Antonio while teaching at Helotes Elementary. She went on to serve as vice principal and principal for Northwest Crossing Elementary and principal at Leon Springs Elementary.
Mary and her husband shared a passion for travel and lhasa apso dogs. After retirement, they often went all together in their fifth wheel, camping for months at a time to Alaska and the American west. However, they could be relied upon to rearrange their trips to help family, welcome a new grandchild into the world, and join family on pilgrimage.
After Thomas’ death in 2016, Mary enjoyed the company and care of close family from Kansas and San Antonio for nearly a decade before her own departure. In that time, she acquired a love for her special dachshund-Little Boy.
She is survived by her daughters, Stefanie and Elisabeth, 12 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, her daughter Regina Stout, and her brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Josephine Holzhauer, nephew Steven Holzhauer and son-in-law Chuck Livonia.
Her services will include a viewing and rosary at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home on 4 October at 6pm and a funeral mass on 5 October at 10am, reception following at 11am at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Internment services will be held on 8 October at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery.
