On Wednesday, January 24th, in the early hours of the morning, Ms. Mary M. Barboza, affectionately known as Aunt Mary, was called home to our Lord. There she will be reunited with the rest of her family who had preceded her in death.
She will be greeted first by her mother, Mrs. Presiliana Mireles Barboza, and waiting beside Presiliana will be Mary's father, Mr. Felipe Barboza. He will stretch out his arms and welcome her home with the kind of bear hugs only he knew how to give. Then one by one, each of Aunt Mary's siblings will step forward and hold her close. Beginning with Aunt Mary's sisters, Petra Serda, Bertha Esquivel, Clara Soto, Lidia Ingle, Elida Sullaway, Alice Barboza, and finally her baby sister, Luisa. Then Aunt Mary's brothers will take their turn, beginning with Paul Barboza, then Joe Barboza and finally her baby brother Abel Armando Barboza.
The joy this family would feel once more will light up the sky and fill the clouds with laughter and grito's that will be heard throughout the heavens. Mary M. Barboza was a loving Aunt to eight nephews and six nieces and was a Grand Aunt to 22 grand nephews and 18 grand nieces. She also had numerous great grand nephews and nieces who loved her.
Aunt Mary was undeniably the heart and soul of the Barboza family and the life lessons she shared with all those that knew her will be cherished for a lifetime. Her love of family, the desire to care for those in need, the manner in which she kept her house and yard as clean and organized, always to the best of her ability. The way in which she always had time for coffee, provided you brought the Pan de Dulce, and her ability to recall every story, every sequence of events, every Dicho that applies and see the humor and the humanity in every one of the memories she shared.
Aunt Mary was all of this and so much more. Aunt Mary showed us how to endure heartache and how to honor our culture by embracing our family's history and the contributions of every individual that sat at her kitchen table.
Services to honor the life and passing of Mary M. Barboza will be as follows:
The Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Funeraria del Angel Trevino, 226 Cupples Rd., San Antonio, TX 78237, followed by a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m.
The Procession will depart from the funeral home on Friday, February 16, 2024 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection at St. John Berchmans Church, 1147 Cupples Rd., San Antonio, TX 78226. Entombment will follow in San Fernando Cemetery & Mausoleum II, 746 Castroville Rd., San Antonio, TX 78237.
