She took those skills and after receiving her high school diploma from Kenedy High School, attended Bee County Community College where she received her Licensed Vocational Nursing degree.
Soon after she joined the Army and worked as a nurse. She was stationed in a variety of states throughout the USA and spent a couple of years in Germany. She served in the Army for four years before transitioning to the Army reserves where she served for six years.
While she served in the Army reserves and worked full-time, she returned to school and earned her Registered Nursing degree. During her time in the Army reserves, she met and married Scott. Scott decided to return to active duty, but instead of the Army, he joined the Air Force. This decision moved them to a few more states across the country and eventually they were stationed in Del Rio where Scott retired. Throughout the moves from base to base, Mary Helen continued to work as an RN helping and caring for patients.
After Scott’s retirement, they moved to their permanent residence in San Antonio, Texas where Mary Helen used her nursing skills and expertise and worked for Tri-Care. She assisted veterans and their families navigate the steps needed to receive their medical care by approving various medical procedures.
She and Scott were active members of Grace Point Community Church. She faithfully gave her tithes and additional offerings in support of the various ministries of the church. She primarily served by feeding the homeless, providing clothes for foster children and buying school supplies for children in need. She also supported the refugees by packaging food for delivery. Mary Helen also served as the Team Captain for Mary’s Warriors for several years raising donations and awareness for cancer.
Mary Helen died peacefully in her home on February 11, 2023 surrounded by her husband, her two sisters and her two goddaughters. Mary Helen was loved by everyone she met due to her sweet, generous and kind spirit. Scott loved and cared for her until she took her last breath.
