We are celebrating the life of Mary Alice Barnebey Bond who was born to Walker Harold Barnebey and Eva Maree Bedford Barnebey in Omaha, Nebraska on September 3, 1936, and died peacefully at home in San Antonio, Texas, on November 26, at the age of 89.
Mary Alice graduated from San Antonio’s Jefferson High School in 1954, and then she continued her education at Southwest Texas State Teachers College, earning a degree in home economics. While attending Southwest Texas State Teachers College, she became a member of the Alpha Zeta chapter of Chi Omega. She later earned a master’s in secondary education from Trinity University. Mary Alice taught high school English for several years at Lee High School in San Antonio. She married Dr. Frank Loos Bond, and together they built a full and meaningful life in San Antonio. Their marriage, nearly 50 years, was enriched by friendships and community, particularly through their involvement in Lamplighters, Revelers, Los Alegradores, and the Petroleum Club of San Antonio. Mary Alice was also an active and devoted member of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church. During the 30 years her children were in school, she was active in PTA and was awarded Life Memberships in both the Texas PTA and the National PTA.
Mary Alice believed deeply in giving her time and talents to others. She volunteered with the Assistance League of San Antonio, where she was recently honored as a Circle of Honor recipient, and she was a member of the Live Oak Garden Club, the Texas Dental Association, and the Chi Omega and countless other bridge groups. She was also a proud sponsor of the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio and the Tuesday Musical Club’s Artist Series. A common thread throughout her life was leadership; in every organization she served, she naturally rose to the forefront, including her time as president of the Texas Dental Association. She was especially committed to scholarship programs that supported the youth of San Antonio, working to ensure that young students had opportunities to continue their education. Her passions – family, friends, music, literature, gardening, and community - woven into a beautifully lived life.
Mary Alice is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Dr. Frank Loos Bond; her son, Ford Loos Bond; and her brothers, Malcolm Richard (“Dick”) Barnebey and wife, June; Lauren Barnebey and wife, Nadine; and Walker J. Barnebey.
She leaves behind the family she treasured: her children, Randa Gail Bond Cheatle and husband, Edgar of San Angelo; Kirk Bedford Bond and wife, Barbara of Kerrville; and Walker Douglas Bond and wife, LeAnn of Keller.
