Mary Lois Carnes of San Antonio met her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, peacefully in her sleep. She was 80 years old and suffered from dementia for several years. Mary was born to Joel M. and Eula Mae Werner Hairgrove on Oct. 7, 1935, in Timpson, Texas. The family moved to Tenaha and later to Porter, Texas, where Mary graduated as valedictorian in 1952 from New Caney High School. She was Senior Class Treasurer and played basketball, volleyball and softball. Mary earned a scholarship to Draughon Business College in Houston. She met Marlon Norris Carnes in Porter. They married on Nov. 11, 1955, and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. She worked at Sanitary Farm Dairies until her first son was born and she stayed home to raise their children. The family resided in Houston until 1978 when Norris was transferred to San Antonio with Southern Pacific Railroad. Mary was a faithful Christian and was active in the churches they attended. She was treasurer of Hibbard Memorial Baptist Church in Houston and Talley Road Baptist Church in San Antonio. At Hibbard, she also taught the Junior Girls Sunday School and Girls in Action and was active in Woman’s Missionary Union. When the family joined Calvary Hills Baptist Church in 1988, she kept the preschool department’s attendance records for more than 20 years and set up for the Lord’s Supper as a Deacon’s wife. They remained members there. She loved flowers, gardening and to play dominoes. She considered herself a record-keeper and kept daily diaries for decades that told what happened in her family's life. She is survived by her husband, Marlon Norris Carnes; three sons, Andy (Ginger) Carnes of San Antonio, Norris Ray (Kathleen) Carnes of Frankston, Texas; and Charles (Cheryl) Carnes of Castroville, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Jeremy, Tiffany, Cameron, Alexandria, Abigail, Chloe, Clayton, Chase, Cody, Lindsay and Lilly Carnes; four great-grandchildren, Sadie, Emmett, Lorelai and Charlotte Carnes; one brother, Jerry Claude Hairgrove of Magnolia, Texas; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
