

Mary Catherine Cooper died on Sunday, March 15 at the age of 95. She was born in Wyandotte, Michigan and grew up in Michigan before moving to the panhandle of W. Virginia and graduating as the Valedictorian of her high school class at Weirton High. She was married to Vincent L. Cooper for 56 years. They were married in the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. in April 1942. He preceded her in death in May 1999. Mary worked in the Pentagon prior to marrying and spent the first several years of her marriage living at various army training bases in the southern U.S., while her husband trained as a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne.
Mary lived for many years in Kent, Ohio and worked for the Kent State University bookstore. She was active in the garden club, the Kent Women's Club, and TOPS. She and her husband, Vincent, moved to San Antonio in 1994. She was a member of the San Pedro Hills Women's Club and supported the Brookhollow Library. Mary was a resident of Independence Hill for several years and enjoyed many activities, outings, card games and parties while living there.
She is survived by her two children, son, Vincent E. Cooper, of Gilford, N.H. and Hiawassee, GA. daughter, Janice Darling, of San Antonio, and their spouses, Roberta Chereck and Gary Darling. She is also survived by her grandson, Aaron Cooper, of Charlotte, N.C., his spouse Mindy, and great grandchildren, Jackson and Sydney Anne; grandson, Herb Chereck, and his spouse, Kym, and great grandchildren, Aleks and Kynan; and granddaughter, Danelle Chereck, and her spouse, Brian Ginley, all of Peachtree Corners, GA. Other surviving family members include her two sisters, Anna Robinson, of Ft. Myers, FL., and Joan Hennen, of McKinney, TX; and several nieces, nephews and great nieces.
Mary was an outgoing, gregarious person who loved visiting her family members and spending many lively Sunday afternoons with her extended family. She was born before women had the right to vote and experienced great change and upheaval during her long and healthy life.
The family wishes to thank Embrace Hospice, Nurse Mindy, Dr. Richard Ferguson and Wilma LaCroix for their loving and attentive care during the last few months of Mary's life.
She will be buried alongside her husband at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, March 23, 2015 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
