Known as a kind, caring, and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt. She shall be remembered as a shining example of goodness, and always putting the needs of her family and others before her own and reflected many of the motherly qualities of her blessed namesake, who she adored in life and always tried to emulate.
She was born in a small, beautiful river town, Quincy, Illinois, on a hot summer day to proud parents, Alois and Gertrude Belker. She was the second youngest in the family of five daughters and one son (Helen, Alice, Carlene, George, Mary and Barbra). “Liz” was a name she decided to call herself at a very young age. She did not feel worthy to have the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
As a child she was very devoted to her family and parish, St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Quincy. She was very devoted to her patron saint, The Virgin Mary. She graduated from St Francis Academy and went on to attend and proudly graduate from the hallowed halls of Norte Dame High school in Quincy. Shortly after, she met the love of her life, her husband Bill, who just happened to be a very good friend of her brother, George, while they both attended Quincy College in the early 1950s. The Korean War changed their paths and Bill joined the US Navy.
Shortly afterward, Liz and Bill were married at St Francis Church in Quincy on October 9, 1954, and happily began their life together at Miramar Naval Base in San Diego California. There, the young couple welcomed their first of five children, Michael. Shortly after they returned to St. Louis, Missouri where the rest of their children were born; Philip, Theresa, David and Lisa. In 1967 Bill’s career moved them to Kansas City, San Juan, Seattle, and finally San Antonio were they made a beautiful life together and retired.
In San Antonio, Liz and Bill were founding members of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church. Liz was very active in her parish.
Liz was an avid, dedicated volunteer for many church and school programs as well as numerous worthy causes throughout her life.
She was known to help whoever she could, when she could, with whatever she had to share and asked nothing in return. Her generosity, heart, and mercy ran wide and deep.
Noteworthy accomplishments – she was an excellent bowler and carried a 280 average and asked to go pro by Dick Weber. She was also a magnificent Boys baseball manager.
Her duties as a wife and mother never failed the family. She always made holiday’s memorable and special for all five children. She was an excellent cook including, stew, fried chicken and gravy, sauerkraut, roast beef, popcorn and MALTS and baked a lovely lemon meringue pie. No one ever left her house hungry.
She was a steadfast marriage partner and supported her husband like a top sergeant keeping the family together, happy and safe with all its belongings through five major moves. She truly was the formidable force standing beside a successful spouse.
She was known to be thrifty and wise and a great blessing to her husband and children.
She was an immaculate housekeeper. If cleanliness is next to godliness, then there is a special place for her in heaven.
She was a wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother, who lovingly doted upon and supported all of their endeavors.
