While in high school, she was head cheerleader, belonged to the UDC, DAR, Delta Beta Sigma (a national high school sorority) and served as a hostess during the Columbus Pilgrimage.
She attended MSU, but with the advent of WWII, quit college to become a secretary at CAFB where she was secretary to the Commandant of Cadets.
When the war ended, she went to work for her uncle in Washington, but after a few months became homesick and returned home, where she met and married Jack Dix. They spent over 60 happy years together until his death in 2009. They had two daughters: Jill Dix Cole who died in 2009 and Beverly Tate Dix.
Jack's career was in broadcasting and the next few years were spent in moving and eventually settled in Dallas for the next 12 years, where he became GPM for WFAA.
In 1968, they moved to San Antonio where they lived until their deaths. Maye and Jack's interests were numerous and varied. Placing their family and church always came first, but then entertaining, gardening, cooking and bridge.
She was on the Altar Guild wherever they lived and was active in many other organizations which included four years as the leader of her daughters Girl Scout troops while in Dallas and after relocating to San Antonio where she became active in many organizations: Military Civilian Club of which she was president and was a Charter member of the National Assistance Leagues.
Maye was a happy person who loved to whistle. Cynthia Sarsody, Dee Ann Simpson, Mary Russell, Lisa Evans and the two Pat's were her best friends.
Maye is survived by her daughter, Tate who was her helper and companion for her last few years; grandchildren and great grandchildren: Joseph, Jennie and Jake Cole; John, Tanya, Carter and Kaci Cole both of Dallas; and James Kelton Akin of Austin; nieces and nephew: Susan Brooks, Linda Brooks Cheri Windler and Mark Brooks and their families.
The family extends their gratitude and special thanks to Velma and Brisa for all of their love, compassion and care of our Mother over the years.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 25th at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 11 St. Luke's Lane at 1:00 PM.
Those who desire may make contributions to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 11 St. Luke's Lane, San Antonio, TX 78209.
