Our beloved Mary Marie Evans, age 74, resident at the Brix Apartments, passed peacefully away at 2:50pm January 2, 2019 at Northeast Baptist Hospital surrounded by her family. She was welcomed into the world on October 22, 1944 in Sioux City, IA by her parents Minton and Mabel (Bunce) Bower and her siblings Phyllis V. Bower, Neild M. Bower, William (Bill) J. Bower, David E. Bower, and later joined by Michael (Mike) D. Bower. Since her older sister and brothers were adults and teenagers when she was born, she enjoyed an adventurous and full childhood with her youngest brother, Mike, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She would often regale her children and grandchildren with stories of their times together in the Bower household. Mary Bower met John W.D. Evans at age 16 in the church choir. Later John completed a Music Fine Arts degree from Wayne State College, she married her sweetheart on August 25, 1965. John and Mary (Bower) Evans were stationed in Augsburg, Germany after John was drafted into the Vietnam War. They had a full and long marriage of 53 years and welcomed into their family 3 children: Jennifer W.D. Evans (4/16/70), Bryce M.W. Evans (7/13/72), and Linda A.M. Evans (7/15/74). She was an attentive and adored grandmother of 5 grandchildren. She lovingly welcomed each grandchild into her family: Anthony M.D. Evans (1/26/89), Zachary M.D. Stevens (3/11/97), Rebecca J.M. Hendren (12/6/05), and twins, Samual R.W. and Zoey R.D. Hendren (8/2/08). She is survived by her spouse of 53 years, John, her 3 children and their spouses, and 5 grandchildren and her beloved brother Mike. Of special mention, Nancy A. Davis, her niece that was like a sister to her, and present at the moment of her passing. The family is honoring her life and having a private visitation Saturday, January 5th promptly at 3pm at the Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218. An informal remembrance will be held following the viewing at 202 Forrest Trail, Universal City, TX 78148. In lieu of flowers and burial services, please contribute in her memory to the Humane Society at humansociety.org, as Mary never met an animal large or small that she didn’t love. Special thanks to the staff at Northeast Baptist Hospital for making her passing peaceful for her and her family. We will always carry your memory in our hearts.
