July 6, 1926 to September 27, 2015
Mary Lou was born and raised in Covington, Kentucky, the only child of Quincy B. and Gladys M. Swann. The Great Depression marked her childhood years. Parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents played a role in Mary Lou's youth, imprinting fond memories that would last her lifetime. Though times were difficult, Mary Lou's parents sent her to Georgetown College, where she met, and then married, E.D. "Potts" Fisher on March 17, 1947. On May 14, 1948, their first child, David, was born. Potts graduated from college in 1949 and Mary Lou in 1950. Potts became a coach at an orphanage while Mary Lou finished school. When the Korean War broke out, Potts re‐enlisted as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force. On May 30, 1952, their second, child, Linda, was born. Potts made the Air Force his career and Mary Lou became a teacher. The family's first introduction to San Antonio was when Potts went through Security Service Intelligence training at Kelly Field in 1952. The family went through several assignments in Europe and Washington, D.C., but finally settled permanently back in San Antonio in 1958. Mary Lou began her education career in 1959 at Northside High School (later John Marshall H.S.). After two years, she became the very first Dean of Girls. Two years later, she became Marshall's Head Counselor. She remained there until May 2002, when she retired after 42 years with Northside Independent School District (NISD). In 2006, NISD honored Mary Lou and her commitment to education with the naming of "Mary Lou Fisher Elementary School."
Mary Lou lost Potts in 1972 and her daughter Linda in 2006, but remained lovingly active in
the lives of her son David, her seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren throughout the years. She is survived by her son David; her grandchildren: Paul, Aaron, Meghan, James, Sean, Jack, and Samantha, and her great-grandchildren: Kaiulani, Kalea, Julian, Jacob, Devin, Hadley, and Adelyn. Mary Lou Fisher was a devout Christian and a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She touched lives across the world with her bold, generous spirit, her ever-present smile, her academic prowess, and her caring, nurturing ability to encourage others to succeed. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
