Mary Elizabeth Friedlander, affectionately and always referred to as “Peg”, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013 at the age of 88 after a long and fruitful life. She was the daughter of a farming family in Oklahoma. She attended both elementary and high school in a small town public school. As an adult she was professionally active and successful in the business world. Early in her career she was secretary and one of four initial employees of the company for promoting and worldwide distribution of the Barbie Doll. Later she and her husband owned and operated a Western Auto Store in central Oregon. Following positions as legal secretary for two attorneys, her extended position was with the Long Beach Terminal operations of a worldwide shipping firm, Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL). She was promoted within the company to the position of Vice President Personnel at the Long Beach Terminal. After retirement she moved to the San Antonio area at the urging of a brother and later met and married Leroy Friedlander. Both “Peg” and “Roy” loved to travel, especially taking cruises, and they made it a central part of their lifestyle, with multiple sailings per year. “Peg” insured her readiness to travel on a schedule arranged by “Roy”, by dedicated fitness training in the gym where she also enjoyed socializing with like-minded friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and all of her brothers and sisters and only son, Bill. She is survived by Leroy, her husband of twenty years and a grandson, Bill III. She was very proud of Bill and his achievements in both business and personal life. She is fondly remembered by Leroy’s sister and brother-in-law and a community of close personal friends in San Antonio, Long Beach and Seattle.
A Service of Remembrance will be Monday, June 10, 2013 at 11:30AM at Sunset North Funeral Home with a reception to follow. “Peg” will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Highway.
