Mary Jean Hafernick

Mary Jean Hafernick, born on August 25, 1924 in Bay City, Texas went to be with our Lord on October 27, 2016 at the age of 92. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joel and Mary Coleman, and her husband, John Gilbert Hafernick. She is survived by her son, John Gilbert “Gib” Hafernick Jr. and wife, Saskia Bartlett Hafernick; grandson, Rory.

After meeting in Victoria, Texas, Mary was married to her husband on July 9, 1949 at St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church in San Antonio, TX. Mary worked as an educator for 15 years teaching the first grade and later went on to help with her husband’s petroleum business, Cardinalis Petroleum. As a freelance writer Mary wrote numerous articles, some about her son Gib, that were published in the Houston Chronicle and Southern Living. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 7, 2016 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3303 Urban Crest Dr., San Antonio, TX 78209. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Camp TECABOCA in Mountain Home, TX.
