After a fulfilling and productive life devoted to her family, her church and her students, Mary Sloan Holstein died September 6, 2021 at the age of 104. She was born in Mazatlan, Mexico, to Earle and Angela Sloan and had three brothers: Stephen, Charles and Robert. Her father was vice president of Southern Pacific de Mexico, and the family had its own railroad car. Mary attended the University of Texas at Austin where she graduated magna cum laude in 1939. She married Otto Holstein, a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute. In the early years of their marriage the family lived in Montevideo, Uruguay; Detroit, Michigan and Puerto Rico. The family settled in Mexico City where Mary taught Elementary English at the American School Foundation from 1959 until her retirement in 1983. She continued working there as a substitute teacher. She also tutored children in the afternoons. In 1966, she earned her Masters degree in Education from the University of Michigan. Mary loved to travel and during the summer months she traveled as a tour conductor, taking groups to every continent except Antarctica. She took a group of Mexican citizens into China years before the United States had diplomatic relations with that country. Another notable tour she led was a 60 day tour around the world. In 1991 she moved to San Antonio, Texas where she taught fourth and fifth grade in the Edgewood and San Antonio Independent School Districts, until she retired again at the age of 82. Mary valued education very highly and instilled those values in her children, and in her grandchildren. Her travel informed and enriched her teaching and her students loved her. Mary was an active member of Saint Anthony de Padua Catholic Church where she took the lead in organizing the Valentines Day dances and many other activities. She volunteered in North East Senior Assistance (NESA), and she was a member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. She also volunteered to teach classes in Spanish. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Holstein and her daughter, Mary Ayer. She is survived by her son Robert Michael Holstein, and her daughter, Patricia Heard and her husband, John Robert Heard. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Michelle Ayer, John Robin Heard and Natasha Holstein-Charron and her husband Pierre Charron. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 11:30 am, on Monday, September 20, 2021, at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. ROSARY MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 11:30 AM ST.
