Mary Catherine died on September 2nd, 2026. She was born May 3rd, 1935 in San Antonio to Lawrence and Cecile Flume. She was the youngest child of the family and had three older brothers: Jack, Larry, and Edward. She was very close to all her brothers, their spouses, and her nieces and nephews.
She met her future husband at the young age of 16, and dutiful daughter that she was, she obeyed her mother and finished her education before she married the love of her life, Herman Janssen. She started Incarnate Word in the 8th grade and graduated magna cum laude in 1956 with her BS in Medical Technology. She married a week later on June 2, 1956; she and Herman recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Herman and Mary Catherine had two children, Dianne Corbin and David Janssen, and two grandchildren, Jessica Corbin and Andrew Corbin. Herman, children, and grandchildren were the center of her life. She and Herman made many trips with their family, and her favorite places to travel were Maine, Aspen, and Germany – where they made two special trips to find the relatives of Herman’s father that he had left behind when he immigrated to the USA in 1927.
Mary Catherine put her education to good use. In 1974, after raising her children into their teens, she worked for Southwest Medical Clinic and rose to be Manager of the lab. She welcomed the challenge to learn new things and made lifelong friends over her career. Her family, friends and relatives benefitted greatly from Mary’s love of medicine and she became the go to person in the family for medical advice. She could always be depended on to visit them when in the hospital and act as their advocate for the best possible care.
She wasn’t only committed to her family, Mary Catherine was a life-time member of the San Antonio Conversation Society, where she served as Vice President of A Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA). Herman spent years alongside her running the Sangria booth; together, they made many numerous friends and gave back to the city they loved. Mary Catherine was also an active member of St. Monica’s Guild, eventually serving as its president. Mary lived her life helping others and being involved in worthy causes. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
