Mary Ruth Lara, lovingly known to many as Ruthie, peacefully entered Heaven on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the age of 91. She passed away at St. Francis Nursing Home in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by love and in the grace of her Lord and Savior.
Ruthie was born on March 14, 1934, in Giddings, Texas, to Santiago and Maria Lara. After graduating from Giddings High School, she and her sister Dolores moved to San Antonio in search of new opportunities and a brighter future. San Antonio remained her cherished home for the rest of her life.
Ruthie held many roles throughout her long and accomplished life, always seeking personal growth and advancement. She began her career working at a local bail bond company and later joined a mortgage company, where she worked as a processor, helping countless individuals navigate the path to homeownership. She also held positions as a booking agent, writing contracts for local music bands, and worked as an apartment manager for one of the Kallison’s Properties complexes.
She went on to work in the financial services department at Wells Fargo Bank and later served with dedication at the Bexar County Courthouse in the County Clerk’s Office. She held several positions across different departments, including the Marriage License Department, and ultimately retired in March 2001 to lovingly care for her ailing mother.
Ruthie’s deep Catholic faith was a guiding light in her life. A devoted parishioner at St. Patrick Catholic Church, she was one of the first members of the church’s Mariachi Choir. Her devotion extended beyond music—she volunteered at local hospitals, visiting patients and administering the Holy Eucharist to those in need.
Ruthie was vibrant and full of life. She loved to travel and especially treasured her adventures with her lifelong friends, Ray and Velma Riojas. Though she never married or had children, Ruthie was a beloved aunt who adored her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She made each one feel special and loved.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Santiago and Maria Lara; her siblings, Richard, Jesse, and Francis Lara; and her sister, Dolores Lara Torres.
Ruthie is survived by her many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and a host of dear friends who will deeply miss her warmth, kindness, and unwavering faith.
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more,
neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore,
for the former things have passed away.” — Revelation 21:4
