Mary Margaret Nance went to be with the Lord on August 4, 2020 at the age of 99. Mary was born in Streator Illinois to John Chergoski and Elizabeth Chergoski on September 3, 1920. She was the fourth child born in a family of eight brothers and sisters.
Mary, nicknamed Margie, enjoyed telling many stories of her colorful life. She truly led a life of service, but always found the fun and adventure in everything she did. In 1935, Mary entered the convent. As her formation progressed, Mary discerned that she was being called to serve in a different form. In 1942, she joined the Air Force and worked as a medical surgical tech at Bergstrom AFB until 1946. After graduating from nursing school in 1951 as a Registered Nurse, Mary again joined the Air Force. She served as a nurse at Shepherd AFB until 1954. While at Shepherd AFB, Mary met her husband William C. Nance. They were married in 1953 and began building their family. In 1959, they settled in Uvalde Texas. Mary continued her professional nursing career for many years at the Uvalde Memorial Hospital and held positions of Staff Nurse, Director of Nurses, and ER Nurse. Mary was also the Uvalde County Health Nurse until her much deserved retirement in 1986. During her retirement, Mary lived in Virginia, Florida, and back in Texas. She enjoyed fishing and her many arts and crafts. Mary always projected her jolly personality to anyone she would meet. Whenever asked how she was doing, she would respond with a chuckle, “Just fat and sassy!”
Mary is preceded in her death by her parents; sisters Frances, Rosemarie, and Teresa; brothers John, Ralph, Leo, Eddie, and Louie. She is remembered by her sons William C. Nance Jr. (Anne-Robin), John Nance (Kelly), James Nance (Kathy) and Gerry Nance; grandchildren Parker, Tyler, Katy and Megan (James Stewart); great granddaughter Sonny Lynn Stewart and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private Graveside will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with Military Honors for her devoted Military Service.
We will lovingly miss our dearest “Fat and Sassy”
