

A descendant on her maternal side of John Tyson of Wales who settled in North Carolina in 1720, she was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Tyson Woodward and Hubert Woodward.
Mary Margaret was reared in Dallas where she excelled throughout her public education. Upon graduation, she entered the University of Mary Hardin Baylor where she earned a B.A. in English and was the editor of the college paper. She began her teaching career in Corpus Christi where she met and married Paul A. Rode. After moving to San Antonio, she continued teaching at Ruiz Elementary until the birth of her son Ben in 1965.
In 1969, she chose St. Luke's Episcopal School for his primary school education and began teaching in the kindergarten there, a position wherein she would continue for twenty-one years, shaping lives and inspiring students with a love of learning. She earned her Early Childhood Master's Degree in Education from UTSA.
In 1987, St. Luke's created the Mary Margaret Rode Award, to be given annually to a young child whose joy in learning and love of school is particularly remarkable. A lifelong writer, she published a chapbook of poems titled Morning Songs through Wings Press in 2011.
She was an active member at Christ Lutheran Church in Alamo Heights, where she served in many capacities.
She is survived by her husband Paul, her son Ben, and the many students whose lives she touched.
