

Mary Jo Sanders, 88, passed away on Friday, February 27, 2015, in San Antonio. She was born in Lubbock, TX, on March 24, 1926 to Thomas and Vianna Baber. She graduated from Lubbock High School in 1944, and from Texas Tech in 1965. She was a devoted, loving, kind, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Jasper Sanders.
Survivors include a son, David Sanders and wife Marcy of Clearwater, FL; daughters, Nancy Sanders and Sharon Braun of San Antonio, TX, and Betty Bob Sanders of Redmond, WA; a sister, Betty McGee of Everman, TX; a brother, Robert Baber of Houston, TX; 5 grandchildren, Vanessa Braun Rogers, Ashton Sanders, Lisa Sanders Scharf, Geoffrey Sanders, Jonathan Sanders; and 4 great-grandchildren, Jax, Jaden and Jace Scharf, and Archer Sanders.
Mary Jo taught 3rd grade, kindergarten, and dyslexic students of all ages for 30 years. She did extensive volunteer work, primarily as an active member of Asbury United Methodist and Overton Methodist Churches. She also volunteered with Hope Communities of Shalom, providing after-school tutoring; and with the Crisis Center; the Lubbock Lakesite; her Neighborhood Association and many other groups until moving to San Antonio at age 85. She was a member of the South Plains Writers Association and published many devotions.
She enjoyed vacations with her family every year including Palo Duro Canyon, Arkansas, Alaska, Peru, Mexico, and Canada. She was always deeply interested in her family history and wrote 2 books detailing the exploits of her colorful and intrepid pioneer family who helped establish Asbury Methodist Church and the Lubbock community.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 4, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
