Mary Hayashi Turner

Mary was born on May 21, 1944, in Billings, MT. She lived a life marked by devotion to her family, dedication to her work, deep faith, and a generous spirit that touched many lives.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Jerry Turner, her children Harold Turner (Wendy), Kathy Sipe (Randy) and Charles Turner, her sister Terry Salazar and sister-in-law Jackie Hayashi. Grandchildren include Ron Sipe (Christina), Brian Sipe, Madeleine Rance (Logan) and Austin Turner. Great grandchildren include David and Randy Sipe.

She was preceded in death by her father, George Hayashi, mother, Umi Hayashi, brothers, Mitch Hayashi and George Hayashi.

Mary was a graduate of Billings Senior High School and went on to earn her bachelor's degree in occupational education from Wayland Baptist. She built a respected career in public service, starting with Civil Service in Washington, D.C. She later served in administration at Wilford Hall Medical Center and as a Health System Analyst at Fort Sam Houston, where she was known for her professionalism, dedication, and care for others.

Outside of her career, Mary found joy in many creative and meaningful pursuits including calligraphy, painting and card making. She loved flower arranging and was a past member of the San Antonio Ikebana Society. She also enjoyed jewelry making and regularly participated in craft fairs at her church and in the community. Mary had a deep appreciation for Japanese culture and dance, loved traveling, and was known for her cooking and baking. She was also a devoted animal lover, caring over the years for numerous dogs, cats, and birds.

More than anything, Mary cherished her family. She was an active and loving presence in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, taking great joy in their milestones and everyday moments alike.

Mary's Roman Catholic faith was a guiding force throughout her life. A devout Catholic since childhood, she attended mass faithfully every Sunday and actively lived her faith at St. Rose of Lima and St. Luke as an usher and through annual festivals and fairs. Mary was a vital member of the St. Luke Rosary group – sharing her jewelry making experience and tools as well as her homemade carrot cake. She will be deeply missed at 8 AM mass.

Mary will be remembered for her kindness, strength, creativity, faith, and unwavering love for her family. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be held at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio, TX 78238, from 1 to 3 PM on Saturday, August 15, 2026. Funeral Services will commence at 3 PM with a reception to immediately follow. Per her wishes, Mary’s ashes will be interred at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends and loved ones consider a memorial donation be made to the San Antonio Humane Society or the American Lung Association.
