Mary graduated from High School in 1946 and Bowling Green State University in 1950. Post graduating from college, Mary enlisted in The United States Army in August of 1950. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant she attended Therapy School at Fort Sam Houston. Colonel Westhoven, physical therapist, was stationed at Letterman Hospital, San Francisco, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Fort Knox, Kentucky, Battle Creek Percy Jones Hospital, Battle Creek, Michigan, and one Vietnam tour from 1967-1968. During Colonel Westhoven’s extraordinary military service, she was the recipient of A Bronze Star, Legion of Meritorious Service Medal, and The Vietnam Service Medal. Mary retired in August of 1975 after 25 years of service as a Colonel, Chief PT in the Surgeon General’s Office in the Pentagon.
Mary spent her retirement as an avid golfer and fisherwoman. Mary also had a passion for traveling the world. She was a member of The United States Women’s Senior Golf Association. She served on the USGA’s committee to organize many tournaments and rate courses within the United States.
Her parents Verga (Young) and Walter William Westhoven, brother Walter William Westhoven Jr., nephew Robert Casey Westhoven, cousin Sloan Allison Schnell, and lifelong friend Dorcas Stearns predeceased her.
Mary is survived by nephew Charles Westhoven, cousins; Jeff Schnell (Sammye), Cindy Turner (Michael), Jeffrey Turner, Natalie Hetrick, Brian Schnell, Katie Fischer (Casey Streeter), Kai Streeter, Sailor Streeter, Andrew Fischer (SPC Renata Jeffers) Dominik Jeffers, 1st Lieutenant Spencer Schnell (Sarah), Nellie Schnell, Emma Bloecher (Colton), Tyler Schnell (Anna), June Schnell, Caleb Schnell, Ally Terry (Burne), Charlotte Terry, Jackson Schnell (Maddie), and Harper Schnell (Jason Salilas).
Services will be held at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy on April 24th. Visitation in the Chapel from 10:00 am-11:30 am, service to follow at 11:30 am. Military honors and interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:00 pm.
