

He was born on August 28, 1915 in La Coste, Texas to Alex J. Hitzfelder and Adella Kaufman Hitzfelder.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years, Hildegarde Meyer Hitzfelder; his brother, Alex Hitzfelder, Jr.; his sisters, Myrtle Hitzfelder Jungman and Marie Virginia Hitzfelder.
He is survived by his two sisters, Therese Hitzfelder Fitzpatrick Bendele and Darlene Hitzfelder Whetstone and her husband Charlie; Mat's four children, Lucy Hitzfelder, Stephen and his wife, Elaine Wallendorf Hitzfelder, Paul and his long time companion, Dianne Hallworth, and Martha Hitzfelder-Blackwell and her husband, John Blackwell; grandchildren, John David Hitzfelder, Anne Hitzfelder Scovell and her husband Nick, and Dashiel Eliot Hitzfelder, as well as two step-grandchildren, Theresa Blackwell-Fuller and Tracey Blackwell. Great-grandchildren include Ali and Maddi Scovell, Austin and Chase Blackwell and John Wayne and James Wesley Fuller.
Mat graduated from St. Mary's University in 1939 and worked for Burrough's Corporation. He married Hildegarde at St. Joseph's Catholic Church downtown San Antonio in 1940. Mat was drafted in 1941 and served in the Army Air Corps as a Captain.
After WWII Mat returned to Burrough's Corporation and sold the first computer for the banking business in San Antonio to Alamo National Bank in the early 1950s.
Later in life Mat worked for Catholic Life Insurance. He was a charter member of the Westside Lion's Club and long time member of the Central Park Lion's Club. He served as president for both organizations. His interest also included being a member and president of the San Antonio Men's Garden Club. Mat was very proud of the fact that he brought the first women members into the Central Park Lions Club and the San Antonio Lions Garden Club.
