

She was born in Brownsville, Texas and was raised on a tenant farm, but sadly lost her parents at a young age. Eventually, she and her siblings moved to San Antonio and she attended Stephen F. Austin Elementary school until she had to stay home to care for her two younger siblings.
She wed in 1938 at St. Agnes Church, had four sons and two daughters, and was widowed in 1964.
She is preceded in death by her husband Abel Gomez, Sr., her sons Abel Gomez, Jr., Rudolph Gomez, and Humberto Gomez, daughter-in-law Grace Gomez, her sisters Maria Louisa Garcia, Carmen Mendoza, and Marcolfa Rosas, and her brother Alex Escobedo.
She is survived by daughter Olga Espinosa and husband Rick, son Joe Gomez (recently deceased wife Grace), daughter Mary Rettie and husband Ian, nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Matilda, affectionately known as Tillie, worked at the Little Church of La Villita in their food bank program for about ten years before retiring in 1991. She participated in their annual Starving Artists Show which took place at the Historic La Villita which raised funds for the Church's programs, and she made meals for their weekly bible classes.
Prior to that, she spent many years in several local restaurants working as a cook, including Nadler's Bakery and Deli on San Pedro Street where she baked their fabulous cakes and deli sandwiches.
She was a very kind and generous person who loved her family and friends.
She enjoyed entertaining, gardening, reading, country and western music, and Christian fellowship.
She will always be known for having a big heart and for her laughter and smile.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 20th beginning at 9:00 AM at Porter Loring on McCullough.
