Matilde Cruz Galindo was born March 14, 1931, in Kenedy TX – Karnes County. She was the youngest of three siblings and the only daughter born to Emilia and Antonio Cruz. Her small family moved from Kenedy to San Antonio in 1937 when at the age of six her father passed away. Raised by a single mother and two older brothers, she learned to take care of herself and those she loved.
In 1950 she married the late Guadalupe Robert Galindo and raised seven children together. Although they were married for almost 30 years, she lost Lupe too soon and faced raising their family alone. Matilde proved to be tough yet sensitive. Her profound sense of strength carried her family through. She never faltered in her love for her children or her love for her God. Matilde was a devout and unapologetic Catholic and faithful servant. As a homemaker, she cherished her life by making a home and taking loving care of her children. Although we kept her remarkably busy, she found time to get her GED. She also took pride in caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Matilde loved taking care of her plants, gardening, and birds. She also enjoyed spending time with friends, stopping by unannounced to visit family, taking ceramics classes, and in her earlier years bowling, which she proved to be quite the bowler. Matilde also enjoyed helping her friends, and at times, giving a ride to an elderly woman who reminded her of her own mother. Mom was also a home-grown medic, she cured our pets, her children, and neighbor’s illnesses.
She was a devoted daughter, sister, and mother. Matilde is preceded in death by her husband Guadalupe Robert Galindo, granddaughter Jaime Galindo, her father Antonio and Mother Emilia Cruz, brothers Angel and Anselmo Cruz. She will be missed by all who know her. Matilde is survived by her loving sons and daughters, Guadalupe Robert Galindo Jr, Erma DeCock (Phil), Dorothy Alatorre (CJ), Anita Franke, Louise Zamora (Jerry), Joseph Galindo and Marty Galindo. She was also blessed with 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She leaves us in death to meet again one day.
