At just 17, Matilde married the love of her life, Emando Mendez, beginning a beautiful union that lasted 51 years. Together they raised three sons, Emando Jr., Edward, and Edmund Mendez, whom she cherished with all her heart. Matilde was also a devoted grandmother to eight grandchildren Nicholas, Edward Jr., Seris, Madison, Eva, Elliot, Adam, and Ian, each one blessed by her kindness, warmth, and unwavering support.
Matilde lived a life defined by love, generosity, and service. She always put others before herself, offering kindness to anyone who crossed her path. Her home was a haven for family and strangers alike, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, and those with nowhere else to go all found comfort and care under her roof. She never hesitated to give what she had, using her own time, energy, and resources to help anyone in need.
She also had a creative spirit. Matilde loved to sew and make arts and crafts, often gifting her handmade creations to family and friends. Her projects were always made with care and thoughtfulness, becoming cherished reminders of her warmth and generosity.
For many years, Matilde worked at the local elementary school (H.K. Williams), touching the lives of countless children with her patience, compassion, and gentle guidance. After her time at the school, she continued her lifelong commitment to service by working at local senior centers and providing care to elders in the community. Her dedication, generosity, and open heart made her a beloved figure to everyone who knew her.
Matilde was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sister, an aunt, and a friend. Her love was boundless, her compassion unmatched, and her presence brought warmth to every room she entered. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness that will live on in the hearts of her family and all those she touched.
She will be deeply missed, but her spirit of love and giving will remain with us forever.
The family will receive guests from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Ave. A Rosary will follow at the same location.
