

He graduated from Brandeis High School, the class of 2015, where he was a member of the varsity tennis team over the four years he attended high school. He earned the Brandeis Bronco tennis team award his sophomore year for his achievements and sportsmanship. He graduated early December 2018 from Texas State University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He was a recipient of an academic scholarship for his scholastic achievements while attending Texas State University. Matt joined Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity and held several positions including local chapter Treasurer. Based on his leadership skills he was nominated as part of a select group of individuals who received leadership training through the Sigma Tau Gamma national chapter. He was an active member of the Catholic Student Group at Our Lady of Wisdom University Parish. Post graduation, Matt earned his TCOLE license through San Antonio College. On August 2020, he graduated from the San Antonio Police Academy and began his life long dream of a career in law enforcement with the San Antonio Police Department.
From a young age, Matt enjoyed and participated in a variety of activities which included football, baseball, travel soccer, travel basketball, mini marathons, cycling, fishing and tennis. During middle school and high school he traveled to various state tournaments and was a member of the Dominon Tennis Club. Matt practiced his faith at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church where he attended several youth ACTS retreats . Matt was adored by his friends and family. He was known to be quiet when first meeting him, but once he got to know you he was a loyal friend forever. Not only was he a loving son and brother, he was a kind and giving friend. He was someone who was always a pleasure to be around. Friends and family describe him as a warm, caring, intelligent individual who dedicated his time and energy freely to the people and causes he cared about. His love of animals was undeniable. Growing up he had a cat named Sassy, a chinchilla named Chelsea, and his most recent love, Casper an Australian Shepherd he raised from a puppy. He had so much love to give.
Surviving in addition to his parents, Carina and Jim, is his younger sister Megan. Matthew was a loving brother and Megan’s best friend; Also, are his loving grandparent, Diana Sonoff; Aunt and Uncle, Stefanie and Chris Semich; Cousins Isabelle Semich and David Skaggs and many extended family members and friends.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:30AM on Monday, March 8th at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church located at 8500 Cross Mountain Trail in Leon Springs. Social distancing and wearing of masks protocols will be followed. The Church will be open at 11:00AM and the family will be available for visitation. We invite all who are comfortable to stay for Mass.
This compassionate young man will be missed by many and will live forever in our hearts.
