In his 48 years here on earth, Matt was a model of strength and courage for everyone who knew him. With a strong sense of justice and a kind, generous heart, Matt believed in always doing right and not judging people by their outer appearances.
A loving son, playful brother, caring uncle, and compassionate friend, Matt will be remembered for his many exceptional qualities. As a young child, Matt often impressed friends with his unique talents, such as standing on his head, riding his skateboard, and excelling in chin-up contests. His siblings fondly remember Monopoly, backyard baseball, and karaoke evenings with their fun-loving brother.
An avid baseball fan, Matt spent his lifetime enthusiastically supporting the Kansas City Royals, as well as our own San Antonio Missions, having been a Missions season ticket holder for more than twenty years. Matt had an extraordinary memory for baseball statistics, and would happily share them with his fellow sports aficionados. Matt was also proud to be selected to carry the Olympic torch in the cross-country relay in 1996.
A friend to many, Matt could light up a room with his bright smile and quirky sense of humor. He loved to attend social events, and his friends remember him as a supportive companion and quick-witted conversationalist. A proud uncle, Matt loved to read, play ball, and discuss movies and current events with his ten nieces and nephews.
Among his favorite quotations, Matt cited Jackie Robinson's statement: "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives." Matt certainly lived by this standard, as his life touched and inspired so many others.
