Maurice Nathaniel Perkins, a man of quiet strength, deep compassion, and unwavering faith, earned his eternal wings on April 21, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 91.
Born in the Bronx and raised in Queens, New York, one of five children, Maurice’s life was shaped by his love and dedication to his mother. They shared a special bond, that was evident in his desire to make her proud of him. Through their special bond, Maurice lived a life rooted in service, family, and purpose.
A U.S. Army veteran and gifted tenor, he served in the 3rd Armored Division Band and Chorus in Germany. His voice was featured on a recorded choral album, a lasting memory of his service and musical talent. While abroad, he also ran track, played soccer, boxed and cultivated a lifelong commitment to physical wellness. Later in life, he enjoyed tennis, and even running marathons—always moving, always striving.
In 1962, he founded the Maurice N. Perkins Co., becoming a respected Certified Real Estate Appraiser and leader in his field. His name became synonymous with integrity, excellence, and leadership in the field.
He held numerous leadership roles, including president of multiple real estate associations, the Jamaica, Queens NAACP and the Eastern NY Chapter of 100 Black Men of America. A devoted member of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Roosevelt, NY, he served as an Elder on the Board of Governors and a member of the Board of Directors for the Memorial Economic Development Committee. He led the church’s mentoring ministry with passion and purpose, guiding young men with wisdom and encouragement, and was deeply involved in the Men’s Ministry.
Maurice was married to his beloved wife, Betty Lorraine Perkins, for nearly 65 years. Together, they raised a family rooted in love, faith, and legacy.
He is survived by Betty; his children, Lyle (Yvette) and Melanie (Mark); grandchildren, Brionna, Donovan, Raymond, Savanna, and Lauren; sister, Millicent (Warren); sister-in-law, Yvonne; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Cheeseborough and Sadie Perkins; brothers, John Perkins and Douglas Perkins; and sister, Gloria Perkins.
A mentor, a storyteller, a family historian, and a man whose faith and wisdom uplifted all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered
