Max Gilliland was an amazing man. He was trusted and admired by so many people, and he was known for his work ethic and unflinching integrity. Max was a man who earned that trust by always insisting on telling the truth and keeping his word, while simultaneously being an attentive listener.
He was married to Elsie for over 61 years, and his love for her, along with his great desire to provide for her, was evident to all. He wore many, many hats, from husband, to father, to coach, to mentor, and of course, grandfather and great grandfather. Whatever his particular role, he could always be counted on to be present in that moment, and to be a man of action.
Max served his country, his family, and his church with unmistakable pride. While he considered himself a simple man, the legacy he has left behind is extraordinarily impactful. Max was rare in that he managed to be both famously demanding and incredibly generous at the same time. Most of all, he stood up for what he believed in.
To say that Max Gilliland will be missed is a great understatement. The void he has left is vast, and the memories we have of him are rich and lasting.
A memorial service for family and close friends will be held at Talley Road Baptist Church on Saturday at 2 PM.
