Mearion Herbert Houston, of San Antonio, went to be with the Lord on June 22, 2015. He was born on March 19, 1926 in Tennyson, Texas to Alice and Mearion Herbert Houston Sr., and is survived by his wife of 72 years Billie Louise Houston, whom he wed on June 2, 1943. He is also survived by his three children: Carlene Havel, George and Robert Houston; his seven grandchildren Barry, Bryan, Robert, Stephanie, Korin, Cody and Dylan; and three great grandchildren Marissa, Onika and Owen. He also has one surviving brother, Harold Wayne Houston.
He grew up in rural West Texas and spent much of his time on a small farm learning from an early age the ins and outs of a life depending on survival by living off the land. He left home at a very early age and for a time lived among a group of hobos, who were products of the Great Depression and hardships it entailed. After a hitch in the US Army he soon settled on making a living as a carpenter, a profession he would keep for years until answering the call to a new way of life in Fort Worth, Texas in 1955; he became a Baptist preacher. He remained at this calling for roughly 10 years until he preached his last sermon and went to work for the US Government in 1966 at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, where he retired in 1986. He remained in San Antonio for the rest of his life.
A memorial service will be held 10:00 am on Tuesday, July 14th at Fellowship of San Antonio church which is located at 23755 Canyon Golf Road, San Antonio, TX 78258.
